चंदनवन में चंद्र सरोवर के किनारे बहुत से खरगोश खुशी से रहते थे। एक बार सूखे के कारण हाथियों का एक बड़ा और गुस्सैल झुंड पानी की तलाश में वहाँ आ पहुँचा।
हाथियों के सरदार ‘गजराज’ और उसके झुंड ने सरोवर तक पहुँचने की जल्दी में कई खरगोशों को अपने भारी पैरों तले कुचल दिया। सभी खरगोश बहुत डरे हुए थे।
तब ‘चीकू’ नाम के एक बुद्धिमान खरगोश ने एक तरकीब सोची। पूर्णिमा की रात, जब गजराज पानी पीने आया, तो चीकू ऊंचे पत्थर पर खड़ा होकर बोला, “रुक जाओ! मैं चंदा मामा का दूत हूँ। तुमने उनके प्यारे खरगोशों को मारा है, इसलिए वे तुमसे बहुत नाराज हैं।”
घमंडी गजराज ने सबूत माँगा। चीकू उसे सरोवर के पास ले गया और पानी में देखने को कहा। जैसे ही गजराज ने पानी में अपनी सूंड डाली, पानी हिलने लगा और चाँद की परछाईं कांपने लगी।
चीकू तुरंत बोला, “देखो! तुम्हारे पानी छूने से चंदा मामा गुस्से से कांप रहे हैं। अगर भलाई चाहते हो तो तुरंत यहाँ से चले जाओ!”
डर के मारे गजराज ने माफी मांगी और अपने झुंड के साथ जंगल छोड़कर हमेशा के लिए चला गया।
सीख: मुसीबत में शारीरिक बल से ज्यादा बुद्धिबल काम आता है।
